Shrimp Tacos

Shrimp Tacos with Garlic and Cilantro, I tried this recipe a couple of times. As I live in Southern California, we found tacos everywhere! I always wanted to prepare some, but they are so readily available, that I never have, until I found this recipe! The original recipe called for sour cream but I used Fage Greek yogurt for the green cabbage slaw and it turned out delicious. My daughter was visiting me that day and she absolutely love them! I hope you will too!

Cooking Tips

Shrimp Tacos with Best Shrimp Taco Sauce (VIDEO) - NatashasKitchen.com

  • Select Quality Shrimp: The star of the taco, shrimp should be fresh or properly thawed if frozen. This ensures a sweet, clean taste and a firm texture that stands up to cooking, laying the foundation for a truly memorable taco.
  • Marinate for Flavor: A brief marination period can infuse the shrimp with a depth of flavor. Citrus juices, garlic, and spices can mingle with the shrimp, promising a burst of flavor in every bite without overpowering the delicate seafood.
  • Don’t Overcook the Shrimp: Shrimp cook quickly and can easily become rubbery if overdone. Watching them turn from translucent to opaque signals it’s time to take them off the heat, preserving their succulent texture.
  • Balance with Freshness: The richness of the shrimp is perfectly offset by fresh toppings. Crunchy cabbage, creamy avocado, and bright cilantro contribute layers of texture and taste, creating a harmonious mouthful.
  • Experiment with Sauces: Whether it’s a smoky chipotle cream or a zesty lime-infused salsa, the right sauce can elevate the taco from good to unforgettable. It’s an opportunity to play with flavors and customize the dish to your liking, making each taco a personal expression of your culinary style.

Top 5 FAQs about Shrimp Tacos

Sheet Pan Shrimp Tacos - Damn Delicious

  • What are the best shrimp to use for shrimp tacos? The best shrimp for tacos are usually medium to large-sized shrimp that are peeled and deveined. These sizes provide a good balance between texture and flavor once cooked. Wild-caught shrimp can offer better flavor, but farmed shrimp are more commonly available and sustainable options.
  • How should shrimp be prepared for tacos? Shrimp should be cleaned (peeled and deveined) before cooking. They can be marinated briefly in a mixture of spices, citrus juice, or garlic to enhance their flavor. Cooking should be done quickly, often just 2-3 minutes per side, depending on the size of the shrimp, to prevent them from becoming rubbery.
  • What toppings go well with shrimp tacos? Common toppings for shrimp tacos include cabbage or lettuce for crunch, avocado or guacamole for creaminess, diced tomatoes or pico de gallo for freshness, cilantro for herbaceous notes, and various salsas or sauces like creamy chipotle or lime crema to complement the shrimp’s flavor.
  • Are shrimp tacos healthy? Shrimp tacos can be quite healthy, depending on how they are prepared. Shrimp is a good source of protein and can be low in calories if grilled or sautéed without too much oil. The healthiness will also depend on the toppings chosen; fresh vegetables and light sauces are healthier options than heavy creams or cheeses.
  • Can shrimp tacos be made ahead of time? While shrimp tacos are best served fresh, you can prepare some components ahead of time. The shrimp can be marinated and kept in the refrigerator, and the toppings can be prepped in advance. However, it’s recommended to cook the shrimp and assemble the tacos shortly before serving to ensure the best texture and flavor.

Shrimp tacos encapsulate a culinary adventure that is both simple and sublime, offering a tapestry of flavors that are as vibrant and lively as the culture from which they hail. They represent a perfect balance between the delicate sweetness of the shrimp and the bold accents provided by fresh toppings and zesty sauces.
